How to Transfer PowerPoint to Google Slides (3 Easy Ways)
Google Slides opens PowerPoint files natively, so you never need a converter. You just upload the .pptx and Slides turns it into an editable deck. Below are three ways to do it, plus the things that usually break and how to fix them.
Method 1: Upload to Google Drive and open with Slides
This is the fastest way if you have one file.
- Go to drive.google.com and click New → File upload.
- Pick your
.pptxor.pptfile. - When the upload finishes, right-click the file and choose Open with → Google Slides.
- Slides opens a converted copy. Your original PowerPoint file stays in Drive untouched.
If you want every future upload converted automatically, open Drive Settings and turn on Convert uploads to Google Docs editor format.
Method 2: Open the file directly from Google Slides
- Go to slides.google.com and open any presentation (or a blank one).
- Click File → Open, then the Upload tab.
- Drag in your PowerPoint file. It opens as a new Google Slides deck.
Method 3: Import only some slides into an existing deck
Use this when you want to merge a few slides from a PowerPoint into a deck you already have.
- Open the Google Slides deck you want to add to.
- Click File → Import slides.
- Upload the
.pptx, select the slides you want, and tick Keep original theme if you want them to look the same as in PowerPoint. - Click Import slides.
What changes during the conversion
Most decks convert cleanly. These are the usual problems:
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fonts look different | The font isn't available in Google Slides | Pick a Google Font close to it, or use Format → Text → Fonts → More fonts |
| Animations and transitions missing | Slides supports fewer effects | Re-add them under Insert → Animation |
| SmartArt turns into shapes | Slides has no SmartArt | Leave as shapes, or rebuild as a simple diagram |
| Embedded audio or video gone | Media isn't carried over | Upload the media to Drive and use Insert → Video / Audio |
| Charts aren't editable | Excel-linked charts become images | Recreate in Google Sheets and Insert → Chart → From Sheets |
Going the other way: Google Slides to PowerPoint
Open the deck and click File → Download → Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx). The same font and animation caveats apply in reverse.
Skip the conversion entirely
If you're moving a deck just so you can rework it, it's often faster to generate a fresh one. MagicSlides creates a full presentation from a topic, a document, or a YouTube link, and works inside Google Slides as an add-on. You can export to Google Slides or PowerPoint, so the format question goes away.
